Beware of Covetousness

“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15).

As I was thinking over what to write for today, I thought of another verse found in Matthew 16:26, “For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul.” It seems a vicious cycle for many in our world. The more they have, the more they seem to want. They never seem satisfied. Some might even be ready to “sell their soul” to get what they want.

Jesus warned against such covetousness and greed. Some don’t heed the warning. They are perhaps the most miserable people on earth. They have taken their focus off Jesus and placed it all on themselves. If they could only realize that He isn’t concerned about their earthly possessions. Christ is looking more at whether you or I are being a faithful steward of what He entrusts to us. If Christ is not the greatest possession you have in your life, then “take heed and beware.” He needs to be the center of your joy.
