Be Diligent not Lazy

“He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich” (Proverbs 10:4).

In the New Testament in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, if a man wouldn’t work, he shouldn’t eat. There would be some people today that would have starved to death if they had live in New Testament times. You will never see God commending laziness.

If we expect to make a successful living we must be willing to work diligently. If you have the health and strength to work you should. Today both men and women are working outside the home. Their jobs wouldn’t last long if they were to slack off or be lazy.

In Proverbs chapter 6 we read the story of the ant and the sluggard. It’s a good illustration of the diligent and the lazy. If you ever watched a colony of ants in the summer they are busy about storing up for the winter. They may be little but they aren’t lazy. Do you see yourself as the ant or the sluggard?

There is the satisfaction of a job well done which won’t appear on a person’s paycheck, but it is like a personal bonus. If you are fortunate enough to have a job, work as if you are doing it for the Lord. If your “job” is within your local church, be just as diligent about your work. The latter is “laying up treasures” in Heaven and nothing will be as rewarding as hearing our Lord say, “well done thou good and faithful servant.”
