Pride Goes Before Destruction

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

As I read over various commentaries regarding our verse for today, I could imagine a person with a pride problem standing at the edge of a cliff—just one step away from a fall. When people feel they have no need for God and they can make it through this life alone, destruction looms near. That destruction could mean shame and disgrace in this life, or falling off the cliff with no safety net for eternity.  Neither picture is pretty, but it is real.

We see God’s Mighty Hand as one of love and mercy. However, He is a holy God and will not condone sin. Hebrews 10:31 reveals these words: “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” The Word gives warnings, but it is up to us to wake up and realize we might have a problem with pride.
