I Trouble

“And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of  a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou  hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?  So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:16-21).

Often times pride isn’t easily detected. However, in the familiar story of our verses, we can plainly see it.  It was obvious the rich man was filled with pride. He felt he had a right to brag. Notice how many times he used the word, “I”.  It was as if God had nothing to do with his success. He boastfully shared how he was set for life and didn’t have a care in the world. God has a word for people like that.  It is “fool.”  All the rich man had worked for and stored meant nothing. He was going to lose his soul.

If you find yourself using the word “I”, make sure it is in the middle of the word H-I-M.

As we go through this week and look at the mentioned indicators of pride, we will see they stem from the inside out.  How about your heart?  Is it crowded with pride?  Isn’t it time pride moves out so Christ can move back in?
