Mordecai Adopts Esther

“And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter” (Esther 2:7).

I would challenge you to read the book of Esther sometime this week.  It is a beautiful story of God’s protection and provision for His people.  Though God is not mentioned in this book, you can see the imprint of His hand on every page. God is in control as He uses a Jewish orphan girl to save the children of Israel from mass destruction.

Today’s verse shows the compassion of a man named Mordecai who, more or less, adopted Esther. He became her guardian after her parents died.  He loved her as if she was his own daughter.

If you are familiar with the story of Esther, you know about the dethroning of Queen Vashti. Young maidens were taken to the palace for the selection of a new queen.  Esther was one of those maidens. Though he couldn’t be with her, Mordecai watched over her from a distance. Tomorrow we will see how a beautiful Jewish orphan captures the eye and heart of a king.
