Jesus Rescues Peter

“And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.  And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.  And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?  And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased” (Matthew 14:28-32).

It was after the feeding of the five thousand. Jesus had sent the people away and went up into a mountain for a time of prayer. Jesus knew His disciples were out on the sea and their boat was being tossed with waves. He walked out on  the water to meet their boat. At first the disciples were scared.

Only one of them decided to be brave. When Christ bid Peter to come to Him, he started to walk on the water. Peter took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink.  Peter cried out for Christ to help him.  In mercy Christ reached out and took  Peter’s hand and pulled him to safety.  It is a lesson for all of us.  Don’t take your eyes off Jesus.  On the sea of life, trials come like storms to rock the vessel of our lives.

We look away from Him and we begin to sink.  That same hand offered to Peter will reach out to us and pull us to safety.
