Mirrors

“Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do it is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the person who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does” (James 1: 22-25).

Have you ever forgotten what you look like? As women we are always self-conscious of how we look. Be honest, we check every mirror we pass—store windows, the glass doors in the freezer section of the grocery store, car windows, car mirrors, bathroom mirrors—anything that reflects our image for our scrutiny. But rarely do we truly forget what we look like. We choose our outfits with care, making sure imperfections are masked and minimized. We go for make-up, hairspray, perfume, and anything else that will enhance our image. There’s nothing wrong with taking care of yourself, but instead of worrying about vanity, think about Who you are really supposed to see when you look in the mirror.  Honestly, when I look in the mirror I see my Mother, my Dad, my Grandmommy, my sisters, my brothers, and of course, my Jesus.  Well—I don’t see Him literally, but I look at myself and wonder—do I look like Jesus? I do not ever want to forget what He looks like.

Have you checked a mirror lately?
