The Perfume Lingers On

“There came unto Him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as He sat at meat” (Matthew 26:7).

How many of us would have been willing to give as mentioned in our scripture today? This woman may have had to make sacrifices for some time to purchase this ointment. Then she upset the disciples because they thought her gesture was such a waste. They thought it was very impractical because the ointment could have been sold to help the poor. However, Jesus silenced their chiding by commending her for giving unto Him the best gift she could offer. Jesus told the disciples the significance of what she had done, but, at the time, they didn’t understand. If this woman of faith had chosen to use that box of ointment selfishly there would not have been a need to record this again in Mark 14:9 as a memorial to her. Her act of humble gratitude lives on like the lingering smell of sweet perfume.
