“And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her. And Bilhah conceived and bare Jacob a son” (Genesis 30:4-5).
“When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife. And Zilpah Leah’’ maid bare Jacob a son.”” (Genesis 30:9-10)
I chose two Scripture passages for today’s devotion; both mention surrogates. In Old Testament times, a woman who was barren faced shame and disgrace. Bilhah served as surrogate for Rachel and Zilpah for Leah.
These women were merely used as vessels, but, in the process they bore sons who were part of the twelve tribes of Israel. In spite of the sacrifice these women made, they at least had the honor of giving birth to Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
