Read Ephesians 6:5-9 and Colossians 3:22-4:1 about slaves and masters. Do you approach your work as you are admonished? How would your work ethic change if you reported directly to Jesus every morning instead of your own boss? Write down ways you can approach your work with Jesus as your boss, realizing we are called to work always as if He were.

Accountability

After reading Ephesians 5:15-20 consider how you have allowed substances to control you. Alcohol is not the only thing in today’s world that is detrimental to your health or your witness. Excessive eating, overuse of prescription medication, and even addictions to sugar, sodas, or junk food are all damaging to the “temple” God gave you over which to be a good steward. List ways you have been an “abuser” and begin a regular prayer habit, journaling how you deal each day with overcoming your addictions. Solicit an accountability partner to talk with at least weekly to help you.

Read Ephesians 5:14, which was probably taken from a hymn with which the Ephesians were familiar. Compare it to Isaiah 26:19; 15:17; 52:1; 60:1 and Malachi 4:2. Think of at least one time you were so engrossed in a problem or issue with your own life that you failed to see the needs of those around you. Sing or pray the following lines: “Open my eyes, Lord. I want to see Jesus; to reach out and touch him; to say that I love him. Open my ears, Lord, and help me to listen. Open my eyes, Lord. I want to see Jesus.”

Read Ephesians 5:5 and realize that no one is exempt from the exhibition of the qualities described. Prayerfully consider how you’ve fallen into immoral, impure, or greedy activities within the last two months. Pay attention to the smallest of errors. Write how you plan to overcome these temptations in the future and ask your accountability partner to help hold you to it.

Read Ephesians 4:30. Write down how you feel when you think about some of your habits bringing sorrow to the Holy Spirit? List habits you know are displeasing to God and say a prayer enumerating each one, asking God to help you overcome them. Seek a trustworthy accountability partner to help you pray and overcome these habits.

List your “enemies” or the people you have the most trouble loving. Now write down at least three good traits about each of them, and at least one way you can exhibit Christ-like love to them. Pray for God to provide the opportunity for you to do so. Put these people on your daily or weekly personal prayer list. It’s tough to dislike someone for whom you’re praying. (Be careful not to pray for God to change them, but rather to change you.)
