The Purpose of Creation

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure” (Revelation 4:11).

We now turn to the purpose of the Creation. Our verse states this clearly. There is no hidden agenda or dark mystery. All that God created was according to His Plan and Will and for His pleasure. God, who hung the sun, moon, and stars in place, keeps the earth turning on its axis today. It’s wonderful to know it was His pleasure to design everything about the world we live in.

The Spirit Moved

“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2).

The Triune God is all there in the Creation. God, the Father, Jesus, His Son, and the Holy Spirit are all present at the greatest miracle ever to be performed—the Creation! God the Father initiates it all. Jesus, the Word, according to John 1:1-3, was the active one in Creation. The Bible states that all things were made by Him (Jesus). The Holy Spirit lovingly hovers over all of Creation.

The Son Was Also There

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).

God’s Son is referred in today’s scripture as the “Word.” The next verse states the Word “was in the beginning with God.” There should be no doubt this was God’s Son. I can think of no one closer to the Father than His Son to work with Him in creation. Jesus was the “Word” which either written or spoken reveals He was with the Father during the creation process. Tomorrow we will see the final part of the Trinity in creation. Yes, even the Holy Spirit was there. How marvelous that every part of God’s being formed our wonderful earth!

“In the Beginning God . . . “

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

God existed before the foundation of the world. The writer of our study states, “God the Father orchestrated the Creation.” He had the power and wisdom to create something from nothing. Through His majestic works and His infallible Word we see the presence of an Almighty God. He was the Master Designer, and, by the mere sound of His voice, the world was made. I find this much easier to accept instead of the theories of man. Any time you read the words, “And God said,” accept that in simple faith. God was there from the beginning because He had the blueprint. We will see tomorrow that His Son was there as well. As part of the Trinity, He was included in the work of Creation.

Sufferings

“So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right and trust your lives to the God who created you, for He will never fail you” (1 Peter 4:19).

I am 19 years old: this age doesn’t tell how far I have walked only how long I have been on the road. In all of my life, God has never failed me. One of my favorite verses in the Psalms is 56:8 “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” How tender and intimate to know that God catches our falling tears–not just one or two, but all of them. As women, perhaps especially young and tender women, we are given to tears when we experience moments of great joy and hours of great despair. In Anne of Green Gables when Anne first arrives at Matthew and Marilla’s home, Marilla takes her upstairs and Anne is bemoaning the fact the she may have to leave and she says something like, “I am in the depths of despair.” Marilla huffs and Anne asks her if she has never despaired; Marilla replies, “No, I have never been in the ‘depths of despair,’ to despair is to turn your back on God.” What an interesting statement! That scene always plays out in my mind when I walk through my darkest days and I feel as if I will never see light again. It is so important for us to realize that it is through sorrow that we learn to rejoice, it is through struggle we become strong, and it is through suffering that we are given peace, relief, and deliverance.

Scripture says that God doesn’t give us more than we can bear (temptation, burdens) and I recently read somewhere that “God is not in the burden-stacking business.” There was a whole explanation of the author’s position on the misinterpretation of God’s role in our trials–but I didn’t agree completely with his take on it. I believe that God “knows the way that I take” and I believe that He does test me–He walks with me through the fire that I might burn brighter for Him.

Psalm 119:27, 30, 67, 71, 73
“I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word…I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by your regulations…I used to wander off until you disciplined me, but now I closely follow your word…My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees…You made me; you created me. Now give me the sense to follow your commands.”

My Age

I often hear the phrase “your age,” usually from an older lady in my church, or my grandmother, or my mother, or a teacher. “Girls your age…,” “Young people your age,” and “At your age…” are all examples that have occurred in my every day life for a few years now, especially since I started college. I can remember early on, at age 7 or 8, wondering, “What does age have to do with anything?” There’s the age of accountability, under-age, teenage, middle-age, old-age, etc. Growing up has always been about being too young for some things and then in high school and college I’m now too old for certain things. I have always thought that age is under and over-estimated. 1 Timothy 4 talks about age, but my favorite scripture concerning age is found in Job 32:6-9. Elihu was the youngest of Job’s friends and he’s the only one in the book who was not reprimanded by the Lord. That’s pretty significant! He says, “I am young and you are old, so I held back from telling you what I think. I thought, ‘Those who are older should speak, for wisdom comes with age.’ But there is a Spirit within people, the breath of the Almighty within them, that makes them intelligent. Sometimes the elders are not wise. Sometimes the aged do not understand justice.” So I’m still wondering: What does age have to do with anything?

Evidences of the Holy Spirit (5)

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).

Peter and John were classic examples of ordinary men doing extraordinary things for God. They had no formal schooling and held no position within religious circles. However, they had qualities that people “marvelled” at. Their evidence of the Spirit was found in the courage and boldness they displayed as they preached the Word. What a wonderful testimony—“that they had been with Jesus!” No one questioned their devotion to God—it showed! We should strive to have that kind of relationship with God. It is possible as we are “taught by the Bible and led by the Spirit.”
