Revival in Ninevah

“So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them” ( Jonah 3:5).

Much to Jonah’s surprise, Revival broke out in Nineveh. The people got rid of all their evil things. That could be likened to when the sailors tossed over the sides all the things they thought would keep the ship from sinking. This was when Jonah was on board the ship going to Tarshish and the sailors had to throw Jonah overboard. The people of Nineveh begged God to forgive them.

When the news of the day came to the palace of the king, the king wasn’t angry. He tore off his royal robe and joined his people wearing sackcloth. He went from king to being like a poor beggar. The king declared a fast and all of Nineveh sat in sackcloth and covered themselves with ashes. He believed that if they turned from their sin, God would extend mercy and they would be spared from destruction. Tomorrow we will see God’s response to their repentance.

Jonah the Preaching Prophet

“And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown” (Jonah 3:4).

Jonah had a day’s journey to make and a powerful message to deliver. He cried out the impending judgment upon Nineveh. Jonah preached boldly things people don’t want to hear. He probably wondered if anyone would pay any attention to his warning. Jonah was in for a surprise. The people listened intently to Jonah’s message. In spite of their evil deeds, they realized they needed to heed the warning of the prophet of God. Jonah preached and God took care of the rest. Something exciting was going to happen! We will learn what it was in tomorrow’s devotion.

Jonah Obeys

“So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord” (Jonah 3:3a).

Jonah may not have listened the first time, but he decided this time to trust and obey God. The only thing that had changed about the Nineveh situation was Jonah decided to go there instead of running away again.

Sometimes God has to use various means to adjust our attitude. It seemed Jonah had his changed. However, as we go further into the study of the book of Jonah, we see Jonah was still a work in progress. At least he was willing to obey God which was an improvement from the first time God commanded him to go to Nineveh.

We can avoid a lot of drama if God calls us to go and we obey His command. I’m sure many of our missionaries today may have been reluctant, at first, to go where God would lead. Strange lands, people, and language could have presented an overwhelming challenge. When you look at maps of all the areas, at home and abroad, where our missionaries are serving, you can’t help but respect the fact they have willingly trusted and obeyed God.

Jonah Gets Another Chance

“And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I told them” (Jonah 3:1-2).

Having survived the fish drama, Jonah was more than ready to do God’s Will. And God was ready to give him another chance to do what he should have done in the first place.

If you feel you have failed God in any way, remember the story of Jonah. God forgives and extends another chance to those who come to Him. Admit you failed and you sincerely want another chance. He will forgive and help you to overcome. Learn from past mistakes and God will give you grace and strength to carry out His Will for your life.

A Special Father

“For I was my father’s son, tender and beloved in the sight of my mother” (Proverbs 4:3).

Today is the day we celebrate our fathers. This also includes step-fathers, fathers by adoption, fathers in the ministry and all those men who have been like a father to someone. This Sunday we honor all our special fathers for all the sacrifices they have made for us and being there for all the occasions we needed them. Let’s show how much we love and appreciate them for being our special fathers.

God the Father

“One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:6).

As Christians, one thing we know for sure is we have a heavenly Father who loves and cares for us. He knows our every need and meets those needs with love. A Father who leads and guides us through tribulations that so easily beset us. A Father who sent His beloved Son to die for our sins. A Father who has prepared an eternal home so when our earthly journey is over we can spend forever with our heavenly Father.

Repent Then Obey

“I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord” (Jonah 2:9b).

No doubt Jonah had enough time to realize his need to repent. God called and he ran. He had sinned against God and had a contrite spirit. He told God he was sorry and was willing to make restitution.

We have the Holy Spirit to convict us of our sin. We should be willing to repent and do God’s Will, following Him wherever He leads. Psalms 27:1 states, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” This should give us confidence to continue to do our part in fully trusting the Lord. When we have that kind of faith, we can truly count on God to do His part. Look what He did for Jonah. Jonah was delivered out of that fish onto dry ground.

The same God who rescued Jonah will make a way for you to escape your trials and problems. Remember, “Salvation is of the Lord!” He will free us from that bondage and we can press on for His glory.
