The Lord is our Inheritance

“The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him” (Lamentations 3:24).

Most of us probably don’t have any rich relatives to leave us any kind of earthly inheritance. That shouldn’t concern us because our hope and future lie in the hands of God. With our finite minds, we can’t begin to imagine what’s in store for us beyond this life. Words cannot begin to express the glory that awaits those ready to meet the Lord.
How can we keep quiet around others not ready to meet the Lord? We must “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15b).

What Will Be Our Memorial?

“Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her” (Matthew 26:13).

If we leave this world before Christ’s return, what kind of memorial will we leave? Will others say we made a difference in their lives? Will they say we gave and did our best for Jesus? As people watch our lives, do they see Jesus in our walk and talk? It has been said we may be the only Bible some may ever read. Will our faithfulness to God point others toward Him? Will our “memorial” linger on, long after we are gone? These are questions we must ponder as we redeem our remaining time.

The Perfume Lingers On

“There came unto Him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as He sat at meat” (Matthew 26:7).

How many of us would have been willing to give as mentioned in our scripture today? This woman may have had to make sacrifices for some time to purchase this ointment. Then she upset the disciples because they thought her gesture was such a waste. They thought it was very impractical because the ointment could have been sold to help the poor. However, Jesus silenced their chiding by commending her for giving unto Him the best gift she could offer. Jesus told the disciples the significance of what she had done, but, at the time, they didn’t understand. If this woman of faith had chosen to use that box of ointment selfishly there would not have been a need to record this again in Mark 14:9 as a memorial to her. Her act of humble gratitude lives on like the lingering smell of sweet perfume.

No Fear

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear….” (1 John 4:18a).

Do we have perfect love? Do we even know what perfect love is? We know we love our husband and children, but what about those bus kids who bump up against us in the hallways of our churches. How about that neighbor who is just a tad bit too inquisitive or the grocery store clerk who is having a bad day and takes it out on us. In verses 16 and 17, we read that if we dwell in love we dwell in God and there our love is made perfect. There are so many ways God can use our love for Him and for others. Let us perfect our love in Him which produces NO FEAR!

All We Have

“For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we carry nothing out” (1 Timothy 6:7).

How many have heard the old saying; “I’ve never seen a hearse with a U Haul trailer hitched to the back”? I have heard preachers use this illustration for years. I’ve said before there is nothing wrong with having things or money. What wealth we have is a blessing from God but what are we doing for the Lord. A lot of us do not have wealth but we have talents and gifts to use for the Lord. We need to use every asset we have to promote God’s work here on earth. He is depending on us to spread His gospel of salvation to the lost. What we will take with us is what we have done for Him.

It’s Foolish not to be Rich Toward God

“So is he that layeth up treasures for himself and is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:21).

Our verse for today is the last verse in the parable of the rich fool. In previous devotions we learned about “laying up treasures in Heaven.” It is obvious the rich fool wasn’t interested in doing so. I don’t think anyone would want God to call them a “fool.” However, if we aren’t making eternal investments for eternity, we are not only a fool, but we are “not rich toward God.” We should strive to please Him by contributing of our time, talents, and finances to help others and promote the gospel. He doesn’t demand we give everything we have away. By being a good steward of what He gives to us, we become rich toward Him. Trusting Jesus not only gives us blessings in this life but we have so much in store waiting for us beyond it.

Beware of Covetousness

“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15).

As I was thinking over what to write for today, I thought of another verse found in Matthew 16:26, “For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul.” It seems a vicious cycle for many in our world. The more they have, the more they seem to want. They never seem satisfied. Some might even be ready to “sell their soul” to get what they want.

Jesus warned against such covetousness and greed. Some don’t heed the warning. They are perhaps the most miserable people on earth. They have taken their focus off Jesus and placed it all on themselves. If they could only realize that He isn’t concerned about their earthly possessions. Christ is looking more at whether you or I are being a faithful steward of what He entrusts to us. If Christ is not the greatest possession you have in your life, then “take heed and beware.” He needs to be the center of your joy.
