God’s Counsel to Laodecia

“Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:” (Revelation 3:17).

Laodecia was one of the seven churches mentioned in the book of Revelation. God didn’t have too many favorable things to say about this “lukewarm” church. Sadly, we can see some similarities between Laodecia and many of today’s churches. The Lord offers hope to what seems like a doomed situation. He gave counsel to Laodecia that is still appropriate today for churches and individuals. In Revelation 3:19, we find these words, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; be zealous therefore and repent.”

The last portion of that verse admonishes us to repent and rekindle the flame that once burned brightly within our soul. Many people of great wealth, if they were to lose it all tomorrow, would soon realize without God they are “wretched and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.”

Trust in the Riches of God

“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17).

If you have ever read about or lived during the time of the stock market crash of 1929, you know how earthly riches cannot be trusted. I’m sure there are other accounts that bear out the fact that people cannot depend on earthly wealth. If you dependent more on your wealth than God, your priorities need changing. Earthly riches are prone to draw one away from God. It tends to make people trust more in their own might and wisdom.

Most of us don’t have great wealth. It is more practical to trust God who is able to “supply all your need according to his riches by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). This verse doesn’t just cover finances but every need you could possibly be facing. Doesn’t it make more sense to transfer trust over to the One Who owns the cattle on a thousand hills? As Christians, we should know by now, everything we have belongs to Him. We are just to be good stewards of what He loans to us without interest.

An Enduring Inheritance

“To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4).

Even if, we would ever receive a significant earthly inheritance, it wouldn’t be lasting. We may try to bank it in some manner or invest it, but eventually it would be gone. When life is over, we can’t take any of it with us so it seems pointless to worry about something that will not endure forever.

As Christians, our inheritance is reserved for us in Heaven and will never fade away. It’s much simpler to live by faith allowing God to provide for us, not only in this life, but for all eternity. We have the promise of an “enduring inheritance” that nothing or no one can destroy.

Time of Need

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in the time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

These days are very busy times for women everywhere. Women in our churches are helping competitors get ready for the National Youth Conference and finalizing projects and paper work to turn in to WNAC. In general women across our denomination are busy, busy, and busy. Ladies, if we need help in these busy times we are told to come boldly for help. Our women have a great spectrum of needs at this time but can find their help at the throne of grace. Let’s pray for each other at this time and lend a hand to help another.

Redeeming the Time

“Redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16).

The sun is warm the breezes are full of fragrant blossoms and the outdoors is inviting. There are gardens to plant, lawns to mow and just fun things to do. Everyone loves spring and are beckoned to the call of its pleasantness. But we should stay faithful to our Lord and to those things for which we have been given responsibility. Stay faithful and enjoy the beautiful springs days the Lord has blessed us with.

What Will You Leave Your Children?

“Receive my instruction and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold” (Proverbs 8:10).

One of my brothers has used this quote in regards to leaving any inheritance to his children, “I’m givin’ while I’m livin’, so you will be knowin’ when I’m goin.’” As humorous as that might sound, many of us, who may have little of this world’s goods to leave their kids, can relate. However, our prayer can be that we tried our best to instruct them in the ways of the Lord and that knowledge will be priceless to them when our lives are over. In doing so, we are leaving them things more precious than silver or gold.

How Will Your Children Remember You?

“…a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30b).

If we leave for glory before our children do, what will be our legacy for them? As one who has faced much sickness and pain, I personally don’t want my children to just remember that about me. I want it inscribed on their hearts that I loved the Lord and overcame whatever I faced by His mercy and grace. If I can accomplish that, then I will feel I did not fail them.

What will live on in the hearts of your children? Will they see how much you loved and served the Lord? Will they be able to praise the memory of you?
