The Psalms

Psalm 119:16 “I will delight myself in thy statutes; I will not forget thy word.”

The Book of Psalms is so unique in that there is great variety in spiritual experiences. Psalms is a popular book for Christians because it addresses and gives counsel to so many needs. It gives many verses and passages to a vast number of topics such as prayer, praise, thanksgiving, protection, safety, mercy, the Lord’s care, distress, commitment, forgiveness, sin, salvation, soul winning, worship, deliverance, and refuge. The scarlet thread of Jesus Christ runs through its pages as well. It’s a timeless book that reaches out to all of us. Psalms has 150 chapters, 2,461 verses and 43,743 words. The Psalms—all for us, for any need.

S.O.S.

Psalm 4:1
“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness; Thou hast enlarged (relieved) me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.”

Dear sisters in the Lord, have you ever been in distress at one time or another? Have you felt the pressure of the walls closing in on you? Do you feel like you are drowning in life’s conflicts and stress? S.O.S. It is time to send your distress signal to the Lord. His open arms are waiting like a lifeboat to save you from all the problems you are facing today. He will lift you above the clouds of anxiety and give you relief. “And call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me” (Psalm 50:15).

Music, Music, Music

Psalm 96:1,2
“O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord all the earth. Sing unto the Lord bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.”

Almost everyone has sung at one time or another. Admittedly, some are better singers than others, but we all sing. We sing with a church choir, a favorite song or even a commercial jingle. My mother has always had a song in her heart. She used to sing all the time. Seven months ago she had two surgical operations at one time. One of the surgeries was to correct a serious condition that rendered her with 50% pulmonary volume. She had been unable to sing for some time. About 3 months into her recovery she announced with glistening eyes and a joyful heart; “I can sing.”

Grandmothers

2 Timothy 1:5a
“When I called to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois….”

My mom has always said, “If you want to know who you are, look at your grandmothers.” I loved both my grandmothers very much and respected them for the women they were. Between them they raised 17 children and took this responsibility very seriously. During the Depression, my father’s mother would open the door to find children who had been dropped off to be fed, and gladly she fed them Both grandmothers never turned anyone away for food or provision. They were both frugal, which made for a really tight granddaughter. They made clothes, dish cloths, curtains, shoes, candles and a happy home. I have fond memories of both my grandmothers, and I am grateful to know that I am both of them wrapped up in me.

Mother’s Day

In honor of my mom, Marjorie Workman,
WNAC Executive Secretary-Treasurer

I Samuel 1:27 & 28b
“For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord.”

So often people pray for a child and promise to dedicate them back to the Lord, but what does that mean? For Hannah, it literally meant physically giving Samuel before he was five years of age back to the priest for life-long service in the tabernacle (I Samuel 1:24). She only saw him once a year at the annual sacrifice (I Samuel 2:19).

Unfortunately, it seems like today many moms aren’t even willing to send their kids away to Christian college or ministry, even with the expectation of holiday and summer visits. If we truly dedicate our children back to the Lord we must be willing to let God call them to do whatever-wherever-whenever.

When my mom left North Carolina at the age of 18 for Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville, Tennessee she would never return to live there again permanently. She would live in three different states working in various Christian ministries each time. None of them have brought much monetary gain, but I have no doubt they’ve brought many priceless crowns awaiting her in heaven.

Since I married in 1995 I have never lived in the same state as my mom. I also realize the same might be true for my own daughter one day. I only hope I can pass on to her the same sentiment my mom taught me and her mom before her: I would rather my child be in God’s will and live far away, than to live close to me but be out of God’s will.

My Brother’s Mother

Luke 7:12a,b;13
“Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold there was a dead man carried out the only son of his mother, and she was a widow…, And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, weep not.”

My brother, while in his late twenties, was in a car wreck that damaged his pancreas. Diabetes set in soon after and debilitated his body. When he became very ill my parents brought him to live with them. Mother took such good care of him—care that caused him to live a better life. This care extended for years, and mom was always there for him. She lost a sister, my dad and her mother in those years, yet continued in her duty to my brother. At 49 years young, my brother took his heavenly journey with his mother by his side.
