We are “Light-keepers”

“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:15).

In the May-June issue of the TWG magazine, editor, Sarah Fletcher, shared an interesting article on the subject of “Light Keepers.” Within her writing she mentioned about light keepers being “guardians of light.” God has called “Light-Keepers” to places at home and abroad. We call them missionaries. However, we all have a responsibility to share the Light of God’s love, blooming wherever we are planted. Several years ago, a secular song had these words, “you can’t be a beacon if your light don’t shine.” Can others find their way safely to God by the light of your testimony?

I love the beautiful hymn, “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning.” It likens the lost to being like a “fainting, struggling seaman, you may rescue, you may save.” As a “light-keeper,” you can lead others to the One who can save them by His grace. Daily you must look to the True Light to keep His light within you shining brightly. There are many “crooked and perverse” people who may be looking to you to lead them to safety.

God sends Jesus for a Purpose

“For God sent not His son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17).

God loved the world so much He was willing to give His only begotten Son for a specific purpose. Our verse today clearly tells us what it was. Jesus was the sinless Son of God, the spotless Lamb of God, and the only One who could be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. We deserved to be condemned to death, but through the blood of Jesus, we are saved. What marvelous love!

Jesus fulfilled His purpose. We, as His children, are on this earth for a purpose as well. We are to bring honor and glory to the One who was willing to die for our sins. Seek God’s direction in what His Will is for your life. Then faithfully labor to fulfill His plan for you until His return.

The Promise of the Light

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

I like the comment Pat Franks shared in her Bible study, “So Send I You” about the book of Isaiah. She stated, “Isaiah is sometimes called the Gospel of the Old Testament.” In our verse today, the prophet Isaiah foretold the birth of Christ. If you do an in-depth study of the book of Isaiah, you will see many details that point to the True Light, Jesus.

Each day we live we are writing chapters in the book of our lives. Do the details of our lives point others to the Light? Or has His light in us grown dim? In an upcoming devotion we will see our role in sharing with others about the promise God kept in sending His only begotten Son just as Isaiah prophesied.

Forerunner of the Light

“There was a man sent from God whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe” (John 1:6-7).

Long before John the Baptist was born, the prophet Isaiah foretold of his coming, “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:3).

John the Baptist prepared the way for Christ. Going before Him, his ministry was to point others to Christ. His preaching and teaching was primarily done to lead others to believe in Christ. John’s testimony had an impact on many lives. We must never underestimate our testimony as we share it with others. Even if we feel we are not Bible scholars, we can bear witness of the True Light who illumines our lives. We have a message of hope for a lost and dying world. Be a John the Baptist and point others to Jesus.

Liberty

“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Praise the Lord for the liberty He gives at our lowest moments, at our weakest moments, in the times when trials and tribulations surround us and when we feel alone. In these times we can feel the freedom of the Lord in our hearts. True freedom only comes from the Lord and can make us feel peace in our most calamity-filled moments. It is our freedom to feel happy, to have joy and peace, to know we are forgiven and on our way to heaven. Praise the Lord for the freedom He bought and paid for with His precious blood and freely gives to His children.

Liberty

“And I will walk at liberty: for I seek Thy precepts” (Psalm 119:45)

We just celebrated the 4th of July, Independence Day. It is the commemoration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. There were picnics, family gatherings, celebrations, fireworks and other special activities and events. This is a special day for Christians because we have the freedom to worship our Lord and Savior. God has truly blessed our nation. A great suggestion is a praise celebration in thanksgiving for the freedom we enjoy as Americans.

True Freedom

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Today is Independence Day in America. We celebrate the freedom we often take for granted. In spite of the spiritual condition our nation is in, we are blessed. Many countries are not as blessed and don’t have the freedoms we have. We sing of our nation being the “land of the free” but many within our land are not free. They are bound by sin and only the Son of God can set them free. Once He does, they will know the true meaning of freedom.

My spiritual independence day came on November 2, 1958. Do you remember the day Christ set you free from the bondage of sin? That is a day you should celebrate with praise and thanksgiving.

As you raise flags and view fireworks remember those who have fought and are still fighting for the freedoms we enjoy today. Set aside some time to also remember how Jesus gave His life that we could be made “free indeed.”
